Gentlecure: A new treatment for skin cancer? Or is it?

An extremely effective ad campaign on television has many wondering if Gentlecure is a new painless way to treat skin cancer. Well, what is this “new” treatment? Is it gentle? Is it painless? Is it the latest and greatest way to treat skin cancer?

In short, this is nothing new. Gentlecure is a made up name. This company works with Dermatologists and installs SRT machines into their offices. In short, this is radiation.

Gentlecure is nothing new. It is nothing unique. They have been using the same SRT machine that is commonly seen in Dermatologists offices.

The treatments are painless. No needles. The results can be excellent, especially for smaller, thinner tumors on the face.

It is far more expensive than other commonly used treatments. The cost for treating one lesion is often over $14,000, which is why it is so heavily advertised. It is profitable!

This particular modality of radiation uses the most treatment sessions, often 20 or more per lesion. Even though these sessions take 5 minutes, it is rather inconvenient to go for treatment 3-4 times per week.

In short, this is, and has been, a good treatment option for many. There are OTHER radiation options that have similar cure rates and success rates, but only require 8-12 treatment sessions. As radiation CAUSES skin cancer, it should be reserved for older patients as this risk increased with time.

My recommendation:

If a provider is offering treatment in their office, you must understand that there is secondary gain–much profit. Make an educated decision that is best for you. Is radiation the best option? If you believe it is, I would highly recommend getting a second opinion at a radiation oncology center that offers more than one type of radiation that may be better suited for you. In addition, the physicians there treat with radiation all day long.
