Facial Broken Capillaries: IPL Treatment

IPL for Facial Broken Capillaries: A Proven Solution for Clearer, More Even Skin

If you’ve noticed small red or purple vessels on your nose, cheeks, or chin that no amount of concealer seems to fully hide, you are not alone. Facial telangiectasias — commonly called broken capillaries — are one of the most frequent cosmetic concerns we see in our practice. The good news is that Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy is one of the most effective, well-studied treatments available, and results can be dramatic.

What Are Broken Capillaries?

Facial telangiectasias are dilated blood vessels just beneath the surface of the skin. They appear as fine red, pink, or purple lines — most commonly across the nose, cheeks, and chin. They can develop from sun exposure, rosacea, temperature extremes, genetics, or simply the natural aging process. Topical creams and skincare products cannot eliminate them. Light-based treatments can.

How Does IPL Work?

IPL uses the principle of selective photothermal action — specific wavelengths of light are absorbed by oxyhemoglobin in the blood vessel, causing the hemoglobin to coagulate, the vessel to close, and the dilated capillary to disappear. The surrounding skin is left unaffected. It is precise, non-invasive, and requires no downtime. NCBI

What Does the Research Show?

The clinical evidence for IPL in treating facial telangiectasias is robust and well-established. In clinical studies, 79% of patients treated for facial telangiectasias achieved greater than 50% reduction in visible vessels, with over a third achieving 75-100% clearance.

In one study of patients with telangiectasia and rosacea, 77.8% achieved significant clearance of facial telangiectasia, with redness decreasing substantially on the cheeks and chin, and patients reporting fewer flushing episodes and improved skin texture.

A 2025 retrospective review published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology confirmed the high safety and efficacy profile of IPL for vascularized rosacea and telangiectasia, with patients demonstrating greater than 75% clearance of nasal and perioral vascular lesions after three treatment sessions.

What to Expect

Most patients require two to four treatment sessions spaced four weeks apart. The procedure takes 20-30 minutes, involves minimal discomfort — often described as a light snap sensation — and requires no downtime. Some patients notice redness for a few hours after treatment, but there is no wound, no recovery period, and no interruption to daily activity.

Why a Dermatologist Makes the Difference

IPL is a medical device that requires proper calibration, appropriate wavelength selection, and clinical judgment — particularly for patients with rosacea, darker skin tones, or mixed vascular and pigment concerns. Research confirms that specific wavelength configurations produce significantly better outcomes than others, and identifying the right parameters for your skin type and vessel characteristics is where dermatologic expertise matters most.

At our practice, we perform a thorough evaluation before any IPL treatment to ensure you are the right candidate, the right settings are selected, and your results are optimized safely.

If facial redness or broken capillaries are affecting your confidence, we invite you to schedule a consultation to discuss whether IPL is right for you.
