Androgenic Alopecia (hair loss)

Hair loss is something that nobody wants in their life, but most get to some degree. It starts with the thinning of hair, and may start to fall out during a shampoo or when you're brushing. According to many fashion gurus, hairstyle is one of the most important parts of our physical identity, but there can be certain health or genetic conditions that cause hair to fall out prematurely.

Male and female pattern baldness is more common than you think, but it can be embarrassing and/or lowers one’s self-confidence. Hair transplantation is extremely effective, but very costly. Topical medications are helpful, but have to be applied daily and can leave the scalp feeling greasy. Oral prescription medications can slow the hair loss and even result in regrowth, but many do not want to take these anti-hormone or blood pressure pills.

What can you do to stop your hair from falling out from androgenic alopecia?

The answer: topical minoxidil, Light Cap Treatments, oral medications (pills), or getting PRP Hair Treatments that uses your own blood products to stimulate your hair follicles.

What is PRP?

PRP, short for platelet rich plasma, is an effective treatment for androgenic (male pattern and female pattern) hair loss as well as alopecia areata.  One's own blood contains growth factors that make hair grow.  For those seeking a natural treatment that is proven to be effective, PRP is a great treatment option for androgenic alopecia.

The blood contains several different types of cells.  For PRP, we only use the platelets, cells that aid in forming a blood clot after bleeding, and plasma (the fluid of the blood).  We do not use red blood cells or white blood cells.  These cells are discarded.  So, as the name implies, the plasma that we use with PRP is rich  in platelets--there are a high number of platelets.

The PRP is then injected into the scalp in the areas in which one wishes to stimulate the hair follicles.

For those searching for a natural treatment, PRP may be a great option.

PRP Treatment for Alopecia

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) involves taking one’s blood, just like you do when getting a blood test.  The platelets are concentrated by spinning the blood in a centrifuge. The platelets and plasma (PRP) are removed, concentrated, and injecting it into the vascular layer of the scalp (only 2-3 mm into the skin) using a tiny needle. Injections are placed one per every square centimeter.

The platelets release growth factors that stimulate the follicles to grow hair.  Hair that has become finer over time becomes thicker again and many patients notice more hair overall.

PRP does not work for every type of hair loss, but it has been proven to be effective for the treatment of both male- and female-pattern alopecia as well as alopecia areata.

What is ?

Male and female pattern baldness is common and can be embarrassing and/or lowers one’s self-confidence. Follicles do not disappear, but go into the resting phase. Hairs become thinner or finer over time and, eventually, only peach fuzz remains from the follicle. In men, a hormone called dihydrotestosterone plays a key role in this process.

What are the treatments for Androgenic Alopecia?

Topical minoxidil has been available for decades with moderate results. Androgenic alopecia, both male pattern baldness and female pattern alopecia, have several treatment options. It was originally used as a blood pressure medication and it was found that patients who used it grew hair. Dr. Bader almost always recommends the 5% preparation and not the 2%. Women apply the 5% minoxidil once daily, while men apply it twice daily. Results take 3-6 months to appreciate and the product must be used indefinitely or results will be lost.

Finasteride, which was originally used for the treatment of an enlarged prostate, has been shown to be very helpful as a treatment for male pattern baldness. While there is some anecdotal reports of improvement for female pattern hair loss, studies have often failed to reproduce these findings. This medication is very inexpensive (often less than $25 a year) and fairly effective. Like minoxidil, results take many months and, if seen, the medication must be taken indefinitely or any results will be lost. Dutasteride, a sister drug of finasteride, has been used more recently with good results and a safety profile similar to finasteride.

Now there is a safe and affordable option that can grow hair back using one’s own blood. Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) involves taking one’s blood, concentrating the platelets, and injecting it into the vascular layer of the scalp. PRP is an effective treatment for androgenic (male pattern and female pattern) hair loss. There are now several studies showing their effectiveness, but treatments must be repeated to maintain results.

Hair transplantation is extremely effective, but very costly. Topical medications are somewhat helpful, but have to be applied daily and can leave the scalp feeling greasy. Prescription medications can slow the hair loss and even result in some regrowth with minimal side effects. Dr. Bader will go over all of your options and together you will pick the treatment that is best for your needs.
