As the dust is settling, we are finding that the affordable care act (aka “Obamacare” or ACA) has left many unable to continue care with their existing healthcare providers. The promise that one can keep their existing plan and doctors is not exactly true, leaving many scrambling to find a new doctor. The truth is that ACA exchanges do NOT allow one to keep their existing healthcare plans. Instead, patients are put on new ACA exchange plans that usually pay less to the doctors than other comparable plans. Therefore, doctors are reluctant to sign up with these new plans according to a report published in USA Today on 10/28/14).
So before you decide to drop your existing coverage and go to a new ACA exchange, contact your providers to ensure that they are contracted or you might be left searching for new doctors.
